My name is Jessica and I am a 15 years old student at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School and I am in love with music. Music is an international language that we all speak and it is a part of everyday life. There is a wide variety of music and genres. I love music because it can do so much, like save someone's life, make people happy & unite us all. I am 15 years old and my music taste is a little different then most teenage girls. I enjoy listening to the radio but when I can I'd rather listen to alternative, punk or rock music. To some or many this type of music isn't the ideal music to listen too but to me it has such a different vibe to it and I like that a lot. In this blog I will be talking about some of the bands I like and their new songs and so on.

You can make it to the sunrise
Our Last Night is a band from New Hampshire, United States. The band is made up of brothers Trevor (vocals) & Matt Wentworth(vocals & guitar) , Alex Woodrow (bass), & Tim Molloy (drums). Our last night was formed in 2004 and was signed early 2007 by Epitaph Records. From 2004 the group has grown up quite a bit and have found their sound, they are a punk/rock band have recently come out with "Age of Ignorance" (2012), "Summer of Covers"(2013) & "Oak Island" (2013). All great records, but there is a song in particular that I'd like to talk about. This song is called "Sunrise". Sunrise is great song with a powerful message to those who feel like they aren't good enough and don't have anything left to live for. The chorus in this song is "When the night is cold and you feel like no-one knows what it's like to be the only one buried in this hole, You can make it to the sunrise." Sadly, there are way too many people young & old in the world who feel like they have no where else to go and no one else to turn to so they self-harm & some even go to the extent of committing suicide. I find that extremely sad & is no where near right and I don't understand why. I know how it feels to have someone you know commit suicide, it hurts, & it's hard to deal with, no one should ever have to deal with this pain. I know that our generation can accomplish so much if we try, so I believe that we should try to make the world a better place and I know that is a lot to want but no one should ever feel like they don't want to live any more. Our Last Nights music video for Sunrise has a very meaningful message and they actually teamed up with the bully project to help get young people involved.
For anyone dealing with a problem like this, I want you to know that there is hope, there is a way to deal with it, and there are people who are willing to help you. You may feel alone right now, but this is just one small part of your life that you can overcome. So many people love you, and so many people would be completely broken if you were gone.
If you are suffering from thoughts of suicide or suffering of depression then please talk to someone and try to get help before things go to far and you get hurt. Remember that you are loved, okay.

Have you ever really listened?
A lot of my friends think that I have an odd taste in music, but I really don't think it is that odd but maybe it's just because I like it. Everyone has a different taste in music and I guess mine is just way different then everyone else's. If anything the music I listen to has way more meaning then the songs on the radio. Sleeping With Sirens is a very good band to demonstrate how much meaning are actually put into their songs. Lead singer Kellin Quinn hasn't had the best life, he has felt heartbreak and is from a broken home and expresses the hurt he has felt growing up through his music. Songs that stuck out in my mind is called "A trophy fathers trophy son" "If you can't hang" and "roger rabbit". These songs are all about the heartbreak he went through, how his father left when he was young and how no matter what you should love yourself before you let someone love you.
These few songs I have picked have really deep meanings to them and these songs are one of the few reasons why I love this band. When preforming you can really hear the pain in his voice and it's like you can really feel the hurt he went through. Kellin Quinn ( lead singer) has gone through a lot and has really proved that sometimes the greatest things in life can come from the most terrible times.
In the song " A trophy fathers trophy son" its like he is questioning why his father had left them and if he ever cared at all. His father had left their family a few days before Kellins 4th birthday, so he had to grow up wondering why his father would ever do such a thing to his family. Now he does not use his last name 'Bostwick' because he doesn't like how it is connected to his father. Kellin has promised his wife and young girl Copeland he will love them forever and will never leave them like his father had left him.
"If you can't hang" is about how he thought he had found the girl of his dreams and married her when he was only 17. He gave her everything he had to offer and in return all she wanted to do was change him and she then cheated on him. The first couples lines in this song are
" Met a girl at seventeen,
Thought she meant the world to me.
So I gave her everything,
She turned out to be a cheat. "
And near the end of the song he says
" I met a girl at twenty-three,
Knew she meant the world to me.
So I gave her everything,
And she did the same for me."
These lines are key for this song because it shows how he went from being with the girl he thought he would last a life time with to having her change his face, hair, clothes, personality, everything! Just to have her leave him for someone new. After that heartbreak he thought he wouldn't find love again but surely he found his true love Katelynne Quinn and he had married her in 2011. It just shows that even if there are hard times, you can get through them.
The last song I'm going to talk about is "Roger Rabbit". This song is one of my favourite bySleeping with sirens because the band slowed down there sound to make a song that is truly beautiful. It is basically talking about life and how you should love yourself. It says " So when you have today, You should say all that you have to say"
This is a key point to life, you have today. You don't know if you'll get tomorrow. So instead of holding things in, whether that be your opinion or your feelings you should express them because you might not get another chance to do so.
So as you can see from my past points, the music I listen to although it may be different in sound it truly has some deep meaning and if you block out the sound and just listen to the lyrics you might be able to understand why this type of music means so much to me.

You have more than you think
I know this blog post is late and I know I do not have an excuse for posting it late because if I am being completely honest I don't have much of a life so I really have no clue as to why I didn't post this on time. I have been thinking about what to write in this blog for a couple days now and I think I finally know how I can put my thoughts into words. I am going to try my hardest to go into depth with my ideas and try to make up for lost time and my other blog post that wasn't posted over the break.
This week I wanted to talk about life, and all the little things we get to enjoy. If you have food in your fridge, clothes on your back, a bed to sleep in and a roof over your head, you are already wealthier than 75% of the world. Even if you don't have a lot you still have more than a lot of people and you should be thankful for that. We get to enjoy food whenever we want and we never get cold because we can just go grab a sweater from our closet filled with the rest of our clothes. If we are bored we can go on our smartphone or computer or simply go watch tv. Sometimes because we take these things for granted but just imagine if one day you woke up and you had nothing. That is why you should take a minute a day to really think about all the things you have and all the things you are thankful for, and then take the time to think about people who are less fortunate than you are.
I often say that I wish I had a new phone or new clothes or more food because sometimes my fridge doesn't look full enough, but now I realize that instead of complaining about what I don't have I should start thinking of all the things I do have and all the things in my life I get to do that some people may not get a chance to do in their lifetime. When I say that I mean I have been able to be a part of school sports teams like basketball & track. I get to come to an amazing school with an exceptional gym facilities, great resources like computers, smartboards, projectors, and text books. I have been to many concerts such as, beat rocks the block which probably had 15-20 bands, Ke$ha, Warped tour which had close to 50-60 bands and am attending 4 more as far as I know this year alone! I have had so many great opportunities in my life already and I am only 15 years old.
So next time you find yourself complaining about the little things in life, try and remember that you have a lot that you should be grateful for

Fall out boy is back
Fall Out Boy is a band you may or may not be familiar with, it is an American rock band formed in Wilmette, Illinois in 2001. The band is made up of Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Joe Trohman, & Andy Hurley. This band has been around for quite a while as I had stated before as the band has been around since 2001. In 2009-2013 they had been on a break but since 2013 Fall Out Boy has made a big come back.
On April 12, 2013 Fall Out Boy had come back onto the scene with the new release of their newest album "Save rock & roll" that features many guest artists such as Foxes, Big Sean, Courtney Love, & Elton John. This album was very well put together and was a really great come back. The album has 11 songs and were all equally great. One of the songs that a lot of people have heard from this album "My songs know what you did in the dark" That song was a comeback success, reaching 2 million digital downloads in July 2013 & was 3x platinum by the end of the year. It always had peaked at #13 on Billboards top 100.
Fall Out Boys comeback was a surprise to many, mainly because they had kept it a secret. Pete wentz had said in an interview " I can't imagine trying to make an album after making the announcement, What if the Smiths got back together? How would I want it to go down?I'd want a song right away, shows right away ...How crazy would that be? " From these words of Pete Wentz you can really understand where he is coming from, if a band who was on a break announced their comeback without an album ready fans would start to push them and it would be quite difficult to write with all that pressure. So, keeping the comeback and new album a secret was actually a really smart move by the band.
I feel like you do not have to like punk or rock music to like Fall Out Boy because their music is really good and I think that anyone could enjoy it. If you would like to you can check them out on itunes or look on youtube to listen to their sound. They have around 8 albums with multiple hit singles!

A little look behind the scenes
When you listen to a song and you think its a good song, you like it for a couple small reasons. Maybe you like it because the singers voice sounds sooooooo good, maybe its because the lyrics relate to you in some way, or maybe its because it's just catchy. We never really look behind all of the voices, and the guitars lyrics, and look solely at the time spent and background of the song. We never really take time to look at the meaning behind songs, and I think we should change that and start to appreciate what the songs truly mean, and the time the band has spent making the song as good as it can be to please their fan base.
When songs are written, they can be written in hours, days or even months, but that doesn't even compare to the hours spent recording. I watched a video about one of my favourite bands before and when they were on tour and just played a show they had to come back on their bus and were able to sleep, but only for 10 minutes because they needed to then get up and record a new single. You never really think about these things but band members and their crews take out so much of their time to try and make their fans extremely happy. That is why when producing a record it takes quite a while, because they're trying to perfect it for their fans because to most bands, fans are like family and friends. To me that is a very good thing because they're so open with us and that connects you to that band so much more. I know this is a short blog post but it has a lot of meaning with it. So next time you listen to a song, listen a little closer and appreciate all the time put in to try and make this song as great as possible, just for you.

THE BEST DAY EVER
So basically I am PUMPED because I just found out that I am going to be attending Vans Warped Tour 2014!
This is a big music festival in Toronto with a lot of punk, hardcore/post-hardcore, rock, and pop music, I got to attend last year and it was honestly the best day ever. I got to see so many of my favourite bands like Sleeping with Sirens, Silverstein, I See Stars, The Summer Set ect. It was such an amazing experience and I cannot wait to be there again.
The Toronto Warped Tour is at the flats of the Molson Canadian amphitheater and it is an all day event! I went in 2013 with my sister, her boyfriend and my friend Dreah. Me and Dreah were so excited because we knew it was going to be such an amazing day and it truly was. We got up at 8:30 am and got ready, we had to wait to get picked up at 9 am by my sister and her boyfriend. Once they got there, we were on our way, but of course because we are Canadian we obviously had to stop at tim hortons for some breakfast! Me, Dreah, Kyle and Kristin we finally on our way to "The Best Day Ever". We ended up falling asleep on the way, but once we arrived I was not tired at all. There were so many people already there! When we got in we found a huge blow up wall that had all the line ups on it. There first band we saw was I See Stars, they were amazing, but because they were a punk/post-hardcore band it was a little to early to hear that kind of music but it definitely woke me up. Throughout the day I was so happy to be seeing all of these amazing bands but there was one that i was extremely excited for, and that was Sleeping with Sirens, they are my favourite band and have gotten me through a lot. Their songs have so much meaning and I am just in love with the way Kellins voice sounds.

NEW BANDS ARE GREAT
Recently I have found out about this new band called 'Issues' and I am now obsessed. I bought the album 'Punk goes pop 5' and they had covered the song 'Boyfriend' by Justin Bieber, I found it really interesting and I never really heard of them before, so because I liked their sound I looked them up and found a new song by them and it is extremely good! The song is called "Never lose your flames". It is a mixture of punk/hard-core. The lead singer has such a nice voice and it really complements the sound of this song, They tend to scream a little bit but its not to bad if you're used to it.
When I looked up this band I actually found out that they will be going to Warped Tour this year and if you read my last blog post you would know that I am going to that event in Toronto, so it will be cool to see this band for the first time live! I've listened to a couple other songs of theirs and they're all pretty good. Some songs have a little more screaming than others, and I'm okay with that except I'm just not really into screamo music I like more punk/post-hardcore/rock.
I was really happy to find this band because I love finding out about new bands, especially ones my friends don't know about because then it is like you have something greater than they do and I think that is so cool, and eventually you can share it with them and then that is such a cool thing to be able to do, to share the same thing. I am really interested in this band and I would like to learn more about them, and listen to more of their music and hopefully I can see their performance at Warped Tour this year! I am EXCITED

May 26, 2014.
On May 22nd & 23rd I got to attend Our Last Nights first Canadian shows ever! On Thursday night I made my way to London, ON and headed to the London Music Hall on Queens ave. I got there around 6pm and ended up waiting outside until 8:30. When I finally got inside I looked around the venue and it was soooooo nice. I headed towards the stage and stood there for a while till the openers came on. There was 4 opening acts but I only remember 2 of them, The Truth Today and Searching for Satellites. All four 4 bands were amazing! At this time everyone was getting ready for Our Last Night to finally make their appearance on stage, the lights got dimmed and the room was all foggy, finally there was a loud thud and one at a time the members started to appear. Everyone was screaming so loud and then finally Trevor (the lead singer) came out and they started singing 'Same Old War'. Their set was amazing and I had such a great time. After the concert was over the band members actually came out to meet the fans and take pictures and ect. I got to meet all the members Trevor, Matt, Woody, and Tim, and it was honestly the greatest moment. When I told Trevor I was going to be at their show again the next day he said that he was going to try and change up the set for me so I wouldn't have to see the same show twice, even though I wouldn't mind it because it was amazing, but I asked if he could play their song 'Invincible' and he said they could try! Trevor gave me a hug and we took some pictures together after I thanked him for such an amazing show. I then went to talk to Woody and he said he saw someone who was crowd surfing hit my head and asked if it was okay, I told him it hurt but said I was okay but he said he would send me good vibes, I thought that was funny. Me and Woody took pictures and hugged it out as well I also told him that I would be at the Toronto show the next day and he told me he would keep an eye out for me, I was soooo happy. Now it was around 1130 so I finally left and headed home.
When I woke up on Friday I was still in shock of how amazing the night before was, I looked at pictures and videos and then realized I had to go to the dentist. After the dentist I went out with my dad and then it was 2:30, I went home changed and got picked up to head to Toronto for the concert. It was at Tattoos on Queen Street, doors were supposed to open up at 5:30 but they didn't open until 7:30 so we ended up getting Taco Bell (classic Jessica move). We headed back to the line and got in and waited around, it was freezing inside, finally someone came on stage and I forget what they were called but after that there were 2 more bands, Conversation and Partycat, they were really good bands but they were also kinda drunk hahahahaha so I mean that was funny. Our Last Night finally came on and I was front row just like the day before! They started with 'Same Old War' again, the second time was even better!! I started freaking out because they played Invincible and that just made me so happy. During the song 'Sunrise' Trevor held my hand and I thought that was a pretty cool moment. He also looked down on me and smiled, then knelled down and put his hand on my neck and put his head against my head for like 10 seconds while singing, that was the coolest thing that has ever happened to me and I couldn't stop smiling. After the concert was over Woody came over to me in the crowd and was like "Hey you came back!!" gave me a hug, asked how the show was, and said we needed a picture together! We talked for a while and then I left so he could talk to other fans. I walked over to Matt (guitarist/singer) and thanked him for such an amazing show and got a picture and a hug. I waited a while for Trevor to come out and once he did I walked over to him and he thanked me for coming to both of their shows and gave me a big hug while saying "I even played 'Invincible' for you!" I smiled and thanked him so much for everything they have done in the past couple days, he got a picture with me (Picture at the top of the post) he gave me another hug and told me he would like to keep in touch through twitter and told me they would be back really soon!
When I left the venue I was outside almost shaking because I was so happy and couldn't believe what had just happened, my favourite band remembered who I was and I got to meet them and I honestly had the best day of my life. Till next time, Our Last Night!!
